Introduction

How many people do you know that are happy in their life?

What does it take to make someone happy? The word happiness can be quite illusive. It has many meanings and interpretations depending upon  who you talk to. Our level of happiness has a direct impact on our personal development.

In our society where technology is rendering entire industries obsolete, where joblessness is worse than ever, many people are facing greater anxiety and depression than ever before.

There have been times in my own life when I have experienced anxiety and depression and found it difficult to motivate myself. It was at times like this that I did research in the local library and/or bookstore to understand how I could generate more happiness in my own life.

I would like to share some insights that I picked up along the way. These insights, when acted upon, certainly improved my level of joy. I hope they do the same for you.

Webster’s Dictionary defines happiness as ” a state of well-being and contentment.”

Spending Time with Good  Friends and Family

Friends and family play an important role in our happiness. Surrounding ourselves with the people we love can bring us great joy. Pets can also be an incredible source of companionship and enjoyment as they love us unconditionally. Love is one of the most powerful healing emotions.

Doing Activities That Give You Pleasure

Activities that we enjoy can give us great pleasure and happiness. Taking a walk, watching a movie or reading a book are examples. We should always try to include such activities in our lives.

Setting Goals

Setting and achieving goals leads one to a positive state of mind. The journey itself can be quite rewarding.

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

A proper diet and routine exercise are key to good health and one’s state of well-being.

Expressing Gratitude

Being thankful for the good things in your life and not overly focusing on what is wrong. Writing down on paper what we have to be thankful for in our lives can be very uplifting. Additionally, paying a deserved compliment to someone or writing a thank you note can elevate your own sense of well-being.

Living in the Present

Live in the present. It is counter- productive  to live in the past. As the saying goes   ” Take Time to Smell the Roses.”

Laughing

Not taking yourself or life too seriously. Being able to laugh at yourself or life’s circumstances relieves tension and makes your life more enjoyable.

Allowing Yourself to be Human

Allow yourself to be human. No one is happy all of the time

Remember, material possessions do not make people happy – perhaps for the moment – but not over the long term.

Summation

Happiness is something we seek and is constantly evolving.

The happier we are, the more gratifying life will be.
